The UK phone switch-off

Business phone line switchover, done before the deadline

Openreach is retiring the old copper phone network by 31 January 2027. Anything in your business that still uses a copper line needs moving to digital first, and it's not just the phones.

Fixed price from £495. Free 15-minute readiness check.

What stops working when copper lines go

Check what's plugged into a phone socket. If any of these use a copper line, they need sorting before your line is switched:

  • Phones on an old analogue or ISDN line
  • Card machines that dial out over the phone line
  • Burglar and fire alarms that call a monitoring centre
  • Lift emergency phones and door entry systems
  • CCTV, fax and franking machines on a phone line
  • Older broadband that runs over a phone line

Openreach has raised wholesale prices for old copper lines three times during 2026, so staying on them is already costing more.

How the switchover works

  1. Free 15-minute readiness check

We look at every line and everything connected to it, on site or on a call.

  2. A fixed-price plan

What needs changing, what it costs and when. No obligation.

  3. We talk to your suppliers

Alarm company, card machine provider, lift engineer. We arrange their part so you don't have to chase anyone.

  4. Switchover day

Numbers moved, new phones or app set up, everything tested before we leave.

  5. Backup plan

Calls divert to mobiles if the internet drops, so you're never cut off.

Phone switch-off questions

When exactly do copper phone lines switch off?

Openreach says the old network will be retired by 31 January 2027. Areas are being moved in stages before that, so your line could be switched sooner.

Will I keep my phone number?

In almost every case, yes. Your number moves across to the new service.

What happens to my alarm?

Many older alarms and auto-diallers need an upgrade or a new signalling unit. We check with your alarm company and arrange it before your line moves.

What about my card machine?

Older card machines that dial out need swapping for a broadband, Wi-Fi or mobile model. Most modern machines already work that way.

Do I need new phones?

Not always. Some setups keep existing handsets with an adapter. Others are better on a cloud phone system with new handsets or an app. We'll show you both costs.

What if the internet goes down?

Digital phones need power and internet, so we set up a backup, such as calls diverting to mobiles, so you're not cut off.
